Author Q & A
Thank you for being here today!
Thank you so much for having me! I’m excited to talk about The Sound of Violet and this special 10th Anniversary Edition.
What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?
When I’m not writing, I lead groups at Hollywood studios through an organization I founded called Navigating Hollywood. We meet weekly over lunch, listen to books together, and everyone shares their perspective on what we’ve read. I also host the Navigating Hollywood podcast, where I interview entertainment professionals who have been successful in their careers to learn from their journeys.
I love spending time with my wife and two children. We enjoy playing games together, which is fitting since I’ve also created board games! I love taking my kids to theme parks. In fact, I’ve been to Disneyland over 500 times! I used to write at the park because there’s something about being surrounded by story-based attractions that really fueled my creativity. I’d work at places like Flo’s V8 Diner in Carsland or in front of the castle. Christy: I am SO jealous of your Disneyland trips! I got to go once. I ate at Flo’s, and it was delicious!
Do you have a favorite author or an author whose works inspired you to start writing?
I work in different genres when writing novels or screenplays. For this particular genre, I’ve been inspired by Liane Moriarty. She’s amazing at giving readers a window into people’s lives and motivations. What I admire most about her work is how she creates these seemingly ordinary characters dealing with everyday situations, and then gradually reveals the complexity beneath the surface.
She has this remarkable ability to balance multiple perspectives and storylines while keeping you completely engaged with each character’s journey. Her characters feel flawed, contradictory, and deeply human. She doesn’t shy away from exploring the messiness of relationships or the secrets people keep, but she does it with a tremendous amount of empathy and insight that I start finding myself understanding the characters whose choices I don’t agree with.
Moriarty also excels at weaving together humor and heartbreak. Her stories can make me laugh on one page and feel a lump in my throat on the next. Her ability to tackle serious, sometimes dark subject matter while still finding moments of lightness and hope is something I aspired to achieve in The Sound of Violet. I wanted readers to experience the full emotional spectrum, just as her novels do, because that’s what real life is like.
What inspired you to write The Sound of Violet, and what made you write the expanded 10th Anniversary Edition?
The original story came from a conversation with a friend about how challenging dating in Los Angeles was when I was single. Dating had been such a bewildering experience for me before I met my wife. I was often naïve and overly trusting, and I built those qualities into Shawn’s character. I was intrigued by the idea of him unknowingly starting a relationship with a prostitute. I thought that would create a compelling journey with a lot of conflict, humor, and drama.
In my first drafts, I created Violet very close to how you typically see women portrayed in movies as the “empowered prostitute.” But as I researched and talked to organizations that fight trafficking, I discovered that women in prostitution are most often victims being trafficked. This realization dramatically changed how I portrayed Violet and altered the entire story. It also gave me a passion for spreading awareness about this issue.
As for the 10th Anniversary Edition, after a decade of reader feedback and my own growth as a writer and filmmaker, I knew this story deserved to be told with even greater authenticity and emotional depth. I revised the novel to deepen the characters and enhance the emotional authenticity. Working on the film adaptation also influenced how I approached this revision. Revisiting these characters felt like reconnecting with old friends. The new edition offers a richer, more immersive reading experience that honors the journey both the story and I have experienced over the past ten years.
Can you tell us about your main characters, Shawn and Violet?
Shawn is a young man on the spectrum who works at a dating app company. He dreams of finding a lifelong relationship, but his autism makes dating incredibly challenging—he misses social cues and struggles with the complexities of romance. He has synesthesia, so he experiences colors as sounds, which adds another layer to how he perceives the world. Despite all his challenges, Shawn is kind, genuine, and sees the best in people, sometimes to a fault.
Violet is trapped in a life of exploitation and trafficking. In her work, she encounters many cruel and abusive men, but when she meets Shawn, his kindness is completely disarming. For the first time in her life, she feels wanted for who she is as a person, not just for what she can provide. Something about Shawn feels different and safe. She begins to believe that maybe, just maybe, genuine love is possible for her too.
What did you find most rewarding about writing The Sound of Violet?
The most rewarding part has been experiencing readers’ reactions. I’ve been able to read advance reviews, and I’m so thankful for the impact the story is having on people. For this 10th Anniversary Edition, we created an audiobook, and it was incredibly encouraging to hear the talented performer Ryan Duncan bring the story to life. He created distinct voices for each character, and Conrad Pope composed beautiful music that accompanies each chapter. Hearing someone perform my words with Conrad’s music has been so gratifying.
Most significantly, women who have been trafficked and autistic men have shared with me how much this story has meant to them. Those conversations have made this entire journey worth it.
Do you have a favorite organization that helps victims of trafficking?
I’ve worked with a number of organizations that fight trafficking, and each has different strengths and areas of focus. I list the ones I’m most passionate about on our website at TheSoundOfViolet.com, and I donate a portion of the sales from this novel to support their work. The National Human Trafficking Hotline (1-888-373-7888, or text “HELP” to 233733) is an incredible resource. It’s available 24/7 anywhere in the United States and offers support in over 200 languages.
What do you hope readers take from The Sound of Violet?
I hope the story encourages people to connect with others more meaningfully—to see past the surface and recognize the beautiful, complex people we all are. Ultimately, this is a story about the transformative power of unconditional love, hope, and healing. I want readers to understand that everyone deserves to be seen and cherished, and that it’s never too late for redemption and a fresh start. That’s certainly something I’ve had to grapple with in my own life.
If this story helps even one person see autism through a new lens or recognize the signs of trafficking, then it’s accomplished something truly meaningful. I also hope it inspires readers to make a real difference in the fight against human trafficking.
Thank you again for taking the time to share with us today.
Thank you so much for this opportunity to talk about The Sound of Violet. It’s been an incredible ten-year journey with this story, and I’m grateful to everyone who has connected with Shawn and Violet. I hope the 10th Anniversary Edition touches even more hearts.
