But back to this wedding.

Vanessa had another reason for not wanting to be here. The groom’s best man had been her friend all the way through school. Even college, although they’d gone to separate colleges. 

Jake Harper. 

Here she was back in Sweetheart Bay, at a wedding by the water. Deciding to never get married didn’t match being a maid-of-honor and it really didn’t fit with the best man being her friend who’d always wanted to marry her. Vanessa had never taken Jake’s teasing seriously. Maybe she should have. He hadn’t mentioned that plan since they’d left for different colleges. And why should he? She’d certainly pushed him away over and over. Shouldn’t she be relieved, glad that he’d dropped that subject?

Remembering the night they’d made that ridiculous deal, Vanessa hoped Jake, who’d become a big shot in the architectural world after he’d graduated from college, would have a beautiful model on his arm, the way he always did at the reunions. Seeing him with such lovely women had shocked her but when they’d talked, he was the same old Jake. Funny and down-to-earth and truly the-boy-next-door type. Neither of them had mentioned the wild deal they’d made, and she had to admit she kind of missed him telling her they’d be married one day. She’d often envisioned what things might be like now if she’d let him kiss her a few more times on prom night. Now Jake seemed content and almost as if he’d forgotten Vanessa right along with their deal. Had he finally matured enough to see his life was better without her in it?
