Christy: When you started plotting the Quest of Fire series, did you always know that you wanted it to become an epic saga told through seven books, or do you feel like God led you to keep expanding the story you were telling while writing?
Brett: I can honestly say I didn’t see what Quest of Fire became when I started. And the structure of the series and having seven entries is super unusual so I still am wowed that the Lord blessed me with the privilege to write something so unique. It began as an assignment for my high school creative writing class senior year. The teacher asked us to write a three-to-five-page fairy tale. At the time, I was reading The Lord of the Rings and The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe and Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith had come out the summer before so I wanted to tell a story in a world that was as big as the ones I was coming to love. A few days later, I turned in a twenty-seven-page epic fantasy mini-novella. Thankfully my teacher was very generous with her grading. From the first time I stepped into the Lowlands (Quest of Fire’s story world, I knew I wanted to explore it more to tell more stories set there. I also wanted to weave in spiritual inspirations like The Chronicles of Narnia did, particularly some drawn from the description of spiritual armor in Ephesians chapter six.
Over the years I expanded on that initial story and revised it over and over, each time layering in more lore, deepening the story and characters and themes until I had the manuscript for book one, The Gathering Dark, ready to pitch. Along with it, I had the second book, Shadows At Nightfall, about a third of the way written, and an ending in mind to shape the whole series. At the time I had kind of envisioned a trilogy, because that’s how great series started from my experience. Already Quest of Fire was a bit different though, because each book was supposed to be a dual timeline story in which two protagonists, hundreds of years apart, were participating in this ancient quest. The intention being to show how stories shape us and how our faithfulness in what the Lord brings us to, even if it looks like a disaster and failure in our lifetime, can be used to inspire, encourage, and shape others who witness or hear of it.
After signing the contract for book one with Mantle Rock Publishing, I was still thinking that way, and then the edits hit. My publisher wanted me to cut about thirty thousand words from The Gathering Dark, and I was devastated, because so much of that was the rich back history for a people group central to the series—the dwarfs of Ordumair. I pleaded with the publisher and the Lord to resolve the matter and got an answer that shaped the series from that point on. Since I was a pretty much anonymous writer dropping a book over five hundred pages long as a series start was risky and not going to fly, and honestly the publisher was right to ask me to tighten the book. It improved the pacing and focus of the story and allowed its core themes to shine through so much more clearly. Which after all my prayer and pondering, I pitched something new to the publisher. Instead of a few huge books, I wanted to spread the story arc across four novels and three novellas. The four novels would have the huge dual timeline story and then each novella interspersed would zoom in to focus on a particular character from the major story arc and advance that story, but also give space to focus on the story world relevant to the novels that preceded and followed it. I was incredibly nervous about pitching the idea to the publisher, because seven books is really rare for any series and any author to be granted and the series structure was already pretty unique and complex and this just added another dimension to it. It’s an understatement to say I was astonished when the publisher said yes to my revised series plan. I quickly revised the cut material and shaped the first novella (now titled Succession) and turned it in to the publisher as The Gathering Dark released. Everything was great! Then the publisher sold Mantle Rock Publishing. I was crestfallen, because I thought that was it. The end of everything. One publisher agreeing to do this wild and sprawling epic fantasy series was a lark. Two of them felt impossible. After all, most Christian fiction publishers really seem to shy away from speculative stories and focus on the more profitable and popular genres. In my mind that was it. And though I prayed fervently about it, my heart was already mourning this wild dream the Lord had given me….
I had forgotten, all things are possible with our God and what we see as impassable obstacles, He makes a way through. The new owner of Mantle Rock Publishing, Linda Fulkerson branded the company as Scrivenings Press and gave me the first sliver of hope when she announced the company would have an imprint entirely dedicated to publishing speculative stories, because Linda is a big fan of them. It was a huge relief and such exciting news. Still, seven books? It felt like too much to hope for. Except, it wasn’t. Linda agreed to do the full series and in spite of its wild structure and extra long manuscripts (even broken up the books have gotten progressively longer with The Unending Light hitting that five-hundred-page mark book one couldn’t justify, but it 100% does). Linda has been one of the series strongest supporters. Having your publisher not just invest in your books but enjoy them is a huge blessing. That’s not to say the journey writing The Gathering Dark to The Unending Light has been completely smooth, sometimes quite the opposite, but it has grown my faith as I’ve discovered everything the Lord led me to and through with Quest of Fire.
Christy: Thank you so much for sharing this with my readers and me! Your writing journey sounds very much like my daughter’s! I love hearing that there are still young people (I feel ancient!) who enjoy reading and writing. I enjoyed reading about how your faith was tested through this experience and how you trusted that God had his best for you in mind.
