The Gingerbread House

After a tumultuous past, Greta Kendall has focused mainly on her bridal shop, located on the first floor of her beloved Queen Anne Victorian near Aspen. For two years she’s fought to save her house from Stephanie Harwood of Harwood Development, who is intent on razing her home to build a new mall. But now Greta’s running out of time. The town council is about to approve the final plans for the mall.

When Gray Daniels walks into her shop, Greta is immediately attracted to his rugged good looks and midnight blue eyes, until she learns he’s Stephanie Harwood’s fiancé. She’s furious to find they’ve tricked her into a publicity stunt aimed at garnering support for the mall. So now her little war has a new front: Gray Daniels. If only she could also fight her growing attraction to him.

A knock on the door brings a return of old danger, and Greta must now put aside her anguish over the house to discover if she’s at last capable of looking the past in the eye and overcoming it—and if she’s finally free to love again.

My Review of The Gingerbread House

This was such a sweet book. I received it directly from the author Nell Carson in exchange for an honest review. It was a quick read for me and kept me engaged throughout. I read it in about 2 hours while coloring my hair and relaxing afterward.

Greta Kendall is the owner of a bridal shop in her family’s old Victorian home. It has been her family since her mother’s home burned as a child. It makes her feel safe. She lives with her mother who is in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease. But they are living there on borrowed time.

Stephanie Harwood is determined to tear down the house to build a mall and impress her father with her savvy business skills. She and Greta meet several times in front of the town council. Greta believes she has information that will save her home, but each time she comes up with new evidence that the home is of historical significance, Stephanie finds evidence that it is not.

Enter Gray Daniels. He walks into Greta’s life when he enters her shop to have his grandmother’s wedding dress repaired for his fiance. His fiance Stephanie Harwood. And so it begins. Gray is representing Stephanie in her endeavor to build her mall. And Greta is intent on stopping both of them. But sparks fly and truth prevails.

What follows is a sweet romance filled with charm and heart warming scenes. Add a little danger, and you have the perfect book to read on a cold winter day or a warm summer night.  I highly recommend this book!

About Author Nell Carson

I was born in Philadelphia but grew up primarily in Seattle where I think I got a little rusty from all that rain!  My family and I moved to L.A. during my senior year in high school and I graduated from the College of Creative Studies at UC Santa Barbara with a degree in Literature.  I later moved to the east coast and ran the New York City Marathon in 1991.  (At 5 hours, 12 minutes, fast I was not.)  I now live in sunny Denver, Colorado with my husband Ben and our beautiful baby boy, Cole, who just celebrated his first birthday!  In my rare spare time, I like to cook, garden and work on the endless renovations of our 1922 bungalow.

Interview with Nell Carson

What inspired you to write this novel?

While growing up, we moved around a lot. My parents bought run-down Victorians every time we moved then fixed them up–my mother did the decorating and my dad did the carpentry work. I learned from an early age that something beautiful can emerge from near ruin and that to destroy that potential forever would be a very sad thing!

When did you realize you wanted to be a writer?

No, my baby boy keeps me pretty busy these days! I plan to start up again after he’s in preschool.

Coffee or Tea? 

Coffee usually but tea when I’m sick which I’ve been a lot with the baby in day care!

What do you wish your readers knew about you?

When I was 17, I was carjacked at gun point. I realized that day how fast and unexpectedly life can be taken away so I really try to savor every day.

Do you have a favorite book or author?

Jane Austen. She was truly a master at creating romantic angst. I’ve studied her books and tried to learn from her as much as I could.
