As a parent and a homeowner, keeping your property and everyone inside safe is a priority. We work hard to keep our families safe; hot water, running with scissors, sharp objects, falling down the stairs etc, it makes sense to put things in place to keep everyone safe, but are you aware of all the dangers in your home?
Hidden Dangers at Home
There are a large number of hidden dangers that could not only cause harm but could cause illness and in some cases, death – what is asbestos? Click the link to find out more. But what are they? And what can be done about them? Read on to discover 5 hidden dangers in your home.
Carbon monoxide poisoning
This invisible, odorless gas can cause a huge amount of issues if you and your family are unknowingly exposed to it. Even in small doses, carbon monoxide can cause headaches and dizziness. If you and your family are exposed in higher doses it can cause a loss of vision and even death. Appliances like cookers, stoves and wood burners all have the potential to leak carbon monoxide, so installing carbon monoxide alarms is a must.
Poisoning
A huge amount of emergency room admissions each year are related to poisoning in the home. Children who have managed to gain access to cleaning chemicals, medications, paints, detergents and even flowers and plants in their gardens are the most at risk here. Make sure all chemicals, personal products and other solutions are kept locked away and out of reach.
Strangulation is a danger at home
Strangulation can happen in the home. And you may not notice until it’s too late. Cords from blinds and curtain ties are notorious strangulation hazards. Even electrical cords and toys with long strings or ropes attached. You can trim cords to make them shorter and ensure that they’re tucked or tied away out of reach. You should also avoid placing a bed, crib or cot under a window with dangling blind cords.
The hidden danger of drowning in your home
Think drowning and it’s easy to picture the sea or a terrible pool accident. However, there are many other drowning hazards much closer to home. Baths, toilets, buckets of water, paddling pools and even puddles in the back yard. As a rule, always ensure that your child is supervised near water. No matter how shallow or confident they may be.
Cuts
Knives, scissors, tools, peelers, graters and more. Anything with a sharp edge from your utensils to your toolbox should be kept out of reach!
Always be aware of things your kids can get into that they shouldn’t! Keeping things out of reach and taking precautions against hidden dangers in your home are great, but they are never substitutions for constant supervision.
