Mass Market Paperback: 272 pages

What’s a kitchen witch to do when her almost-fiancé leaves her suddenly single and unemployed? For Mia Malone, the answer’s simple: move to her grandmother’s quirky Idaho hometown, where magic is an open secret and witches and warlocks are (mostly) welcome. With a new gourmet dinner delivery business—and a touch of magic in her recipes—Mia’s hopes are high. Even when her ex’s little sister, Christina, arrives looking for a place to stay, Mia takes it in stride.

But her first catering job takes a distasteful turn when her client’s body is found, stabbed and stuffed under the head table. Mia’s shocked to learn that she’s a suspect—and even more so when she realizes she’s next on a killer’s list. With Christina, along with Mia’s meddling grandma, in the mix, she’ll have to find out which of the town’s eccentric residents has an appetite for murder…before this fresh start comes to a sticky end. . . .

What’s magic?

I’m Lynn Cahoon, author of several cozy mystery series and I have a new series that just released with ONE POISON PIE. My heroine, Mia Malone, buys St. Catherine’s Prep, a school building that’s seen better days in Magic Springs, Idaho, after she breaks up with her almost fiancé who’s also her boss. Moving and opening her own catering, home delivery, and culinary school, seemed like a great idea. Now, she’s knee deep in renovating the old building and planning a birthday party for the woman who might be the meanest person in Magic Springs. She’s also Mia’s grandmother’s best friend.

Magic Springs is home to the largest coven in southern Idaho, but Mia and her grandmother aren’t those types of witches. She practices a softer magic – she’s a kitchen witch. Her magical roots, according to family lore, come from the village healers, the women who took care of the health and feeding of their community. Mia’s not much into healing others, but feeding them? That’s right up her alley.

I’ve always loved magic in my books. With an early love for A WRINKLE IN TIME and THE PHANTOM TOLLBOOTH, I enjoyed stories where the impossible can happen (within the rules of the world.) Mixing magic and castles, like in Harry Potter, LORD OF THE RINGS, or in Kurtz’s Deryni series, expanded my magical worlds. Writing worlds where magic is normal let’s me explore my own stories while leaning on our shared mythology.

Using the kitchen branch of a witchcraft family tree allows me to make my character a softer version of the witches we’ve grown up with. And makes Mia and her grandmother, characters you’d like to hang out with, even with their talent. Add in an old building with a history of it’s own, and it’s a perfect spot for some mysterious activities. And did I mention there’s food?
