Guest Post from Kathryn Mykel
Kathryn Mykel is the award-winning author of a best-selling Quilting Cozy Mystery Series. Inspired by the laugh-out-loud and fanciful aspects of cozies, Kathryn aims to write lighthearted, humorous cozies surrounding her passion for the craft of quilting. She is an avid quilter-born and raised in a small New England town. She published her first book, Sewing Suspicion in November of 2021 and has published 16 works to date.
From the author:
My short story, Nightly Nuisance, in The Little Shop of Murders anthology is one of the first shorts I’d ever written. When I first started, I wrote multiple short stories and participated in various anthologies as a way to practice and hone my writing skills. Subsequently, I also used this short story to enter the world of audiobooks. You can enjoy a complimentary copy of the original short story in the audio version here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1sQZwuewwd6ONAKy2Ir-CB0bBxd3-3mTP/
I’m often asked about what my day-to-day schedule is like and to that I answer: I am a full-time author, under two names, my pen name Kathryn Mykel for cozy mysteries and my given name Kathryn LeBlanc for sweet/wholesome romance.
What exactly does being a full-time author really mean? To me, it means that I live, eat, sleep, and breathe writing, about 16+ hours a day, seven days a week, about 360 days a year. I wake up every morning and “go to work” on Zoom, with a group of other authors. Throughout the day, I work on all aspects of being a publishing author: writing, craft, editing, advertising, marketing, budgeting, etc.. The list goes on. Last Thanksgiving, I was up the night before until 4 am, editing. Then, I was at the dining room table formatting and publishing one of my sweet romance books, all while the turkey was roasting! Luckily, I had a short break in my schedule to fully enjoy the Christmas holiday.
Behind the scenes:
My closest friends (and some of my writer peeps) would tell you that I am a hot mess! Because I possess this fun quirk, I try (albeit sometimes in vain) to be very organized with my writing tasks, simply because I have a very aggressive publishing schedule. I will be releasing another fourteen new works this year with six more already scheduled for 2024.
Fiction books on quilting: aka #quiltfiction
My books can be read by quilters and non-quilters alike. Some have more than others, but I try to include enough ‘quilty’ details for quilters to feel like the story is truly about quilting, but not so much that other readers who are not familiar with the craft would feel lost. There has been a recent surge in the sewing and quilting industry, and I am proud to bring quilting to the forefront and inspire new readers with my fiction books.
A shop-themed anthology:
When Iain reached out asking me to participate in this shop-themed anthology I jumped at the chance to share my little quilt shop mystery. It may not be my most accomplished piece of writing, but it certainly was fun and I enjoyed it. As a former quilt shop owner it was fun to re-imagine my days working in my old shop. I didn’t have an ominous attic, find any little pieces of treasure, or have a nightly nuisance (friend or foe) visiting me in real life, but that is fiction storytelling for you.
In my personal life:
I’ve recently adopted a small eight-pound, shih-tzu terrier mix dog named Bently and he has been providing me with a ton of inspiration for my upcoming books. I can’t wait for you all to meet him. He might just end up being a character in his own series! You never know, so stay tuned. I’ve enclosed a picture of my demon dog, hopefully, the blog poster will be able to include it for you. Thankfully, he doesn’t always sleep with his eyes open, and rolled into the back of his head! He’s a blessing, seriously, the best little friend I could’ve ever hoped for!
