Adopt Don’t Shop Considerations before Adopting a Cat

Animals· Cats

Thanks for sharing!

Since having pet cats, I can see how people refer to them as their ‘fur babies’. Your pet cat does become like part of the family. Like any other baby, they depend on your for their wellbeing, safety and their health. Owning a pet cat is a huge responsibility. The decision to get one shouldn’t be taken lightly or impulsively. It is better for everyone, you and the cat, if you have really taken your time to think about it. It is a big commitment.

A lot of people like to get their cat from when they are a kitten. There are plenty of grown cats that need adopting, though. Perhaps you might consider one of those instead? Here are some extra things to think about, when you think about adopting a cat.

Is Your Home Suitable?

First of all, you will need to check to see if you have space in your home for a cat. In some cases if you are adopting, the cat center will want to come and have a look at your home. They just want to check that all is on order before sending the cat home with you. Having some space and a yard is nice, but not a must. If you are a renter, then you’ll need to check that you are even allowed pets, including cats, in the house. Do all of these kinds of checks first. Then you will know right from the start if you can adopt or not.

Insurance

It is a good idea to get some insurance for your pet. Your home or contents insurance might need to be adjusted too. The costs of vet bills can be pretty high. You don’t want to end up with a huge bill just because your cat gets sick. Cats like to explore outside for the most part. They could easily get injured by another animal or a neighbor’s pet. It is best to be prepared as much as you can. Take your time to look up the best insurance for cats and get the best deal that you can.

Cat-Proofing Your Home

Cats can be compared to babies. As we need to baby proof a home, we will also need to cat proof a home. Things like medicines will need to be stored away and out of sight. If you have got children, then the chances are a lot of this will have already been done. For example, having plug sockets covered, so they can’t stick their paws in there. Have wires and cords tucked away as much as possible. Small trinkets and things should be kept out of sight. That keeps the temptation to chew them away! There are certain flowers and plants that can be toxic to cats. Make sure that you look into those and remove any from your home if necessary.

Remember, when you are ready for a cat, adopt don’t shop!
