February is Black History Month, and Time For Kids has a book your kids will love. It celebrates four Heroes of Black History.

Heroes of Black History

This accessible collection highlights the stories of four great American lives in one volume: Harriet Tubman, Jackie Robinson, Rosa Parks, and Barack Obama. With photos and artwork throughout, the volume spans three centuries of African American History and is ideal for newly independent readers looking for report-worthy topics for both school work and personal interest reading. Kirkus calls it “a solid volume on these four great black trailblazers.”
Charlayne Hunter-Gault, civil rights activist and former correspondent with NPR, has written the introduction.

I have been a fan of baseball for many years. We always cheer for the Cleveland Indians (even way before they were any good). It’s the all American sport! But did you know that it was once illegal for African-American baseball players to play on baseball teams that were not all African-American? Jackie Robinson changed all that when he became the first baseman for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947.

Heroes of Black History has over 30 pages dedicated to Jackie Robinson starting with his childhood and ending with then President Bill Clinton honoring him years after his death. Jackie’s story is one of strength and dedication. I think this section of the book would be great to read with your child during Black History Month. I also recommend reading it with In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson since the Chinese New Year is also in February.
