Location

A lot of the time people don’t think about the location of their cat’s kitty litter box. It’s important to try and keep the litter away from main entrances. If you can, it’s better to keep it enclosed. Kitty litter boxes should never be kept in kitchens, living rooms or on carpets. The bacteria from their feces can make humans sick. If the litter has to be placed on a carpeted area, lay down newspaper first. The newspaper will help the litter from getting on the carpet, which can lead to smells and bacteria.

Cat litter scoop

All cat owners should own a little kitty litter scoop. It is important that the kitty litter is scooped daily. Removing soiled litter is key to keeping a fresh smelling home. Also, Keeping a cats litter clean has been proven to keep cats healthier. Bacteria can build up and cause many health problems for cats and humans.

Choosing Litter

Always make sure the little you chose is compatible with your cat. Most people don’t realize that cats can have allergies, just like humans. Some scented litters can irritate or make your cat ill. Choosing a litter that suits your everyday life is important also. There are several types of litter to chose from. Some favorites of cat lovers are: crystals, clay, clumping, eco-friendly, and odor control.

Cleaning

In order to maintain your cat’s litter box, you need to clean it thoroughly on a monthly basis. To clean a kitty litter box, use very hot water. Try not to use any harmful chemicals that can make your cat sick. Dish soap works perfectly and gets the job done nicely.

Using very hot, soapy water scrub the litter box and rinse well. Dry the litter box thoroughly or let dry completely.

Disinfecting

Even after using hot water and soap, a cats bathroom can still have a foul odor. A safe and non toxic way to clean away the smell is to use vinegar. It’s cheap and very safe for all animals and humans. Pour some pure vinegar in the litter box, then let air dry. This eliminates the smell and allows the litter to stay smelling fresher longer.

Litter pan liners

Using a litter pan liner is also a great way to preserve a litter box. Litter pan liners trap the litter and don’t allow it to touch the litter box. All you have to do is place the bag in the box and fold it over the edges. Adding baking powder to the bottom of the box eliminates odors also. The baking powder traps smells and allows the litter to be fresher.

By taking these simple steps to maintain your cat’s litter box, you won’t need to worry about your house smelling like cats live there.

We have an Aluminum Alloy Cat Litter Scoop Sifter. We use Fresh Step Litter a lot. There are F.S. paw 🐾 points in their cat litter purchases that we collect and enter on their website. That’s where we got that. There are different animals websites that are really helpful and offer things for your fur babies. We’ve always kept newspapers under our cat’s litte box. It also catches the stray pieces of litter. You’re article is spot on about the fact that litter could make you sick, so we do clean it often. Cats can accidentally spread the dirty litter around in their paws. Keeping your cat hydrated with water also helps with the foul urine smell. I pinned this and shared it on my Facebook page. Thank you for sharing!
