Cozy Mystery

Taylor and Seale Publishing LLC (November 18, 2019)
Paperback: 255 pages
In ancient Greece, the chimera was a bad omen. In WHY ME?, it’s a motive for murder. Bryn Baczek, a Seattle consultant, is vacationing in Scotland, hiking alone in a downpour, surrounded by midges, when she sees a body at the bottom of a ravine. Before she can return to the scene with the mountain rescue team, the body disappears. She learns that he was a scientist and that his laptop containing his cutting-edge research has disappeared. Rumors that Bryn has the laptop make her a target.
Author interview
Thank you, Charlotte, for answering these questions for me! I know my readers will enjoy reading your answers as much as I did!
Christy: In the story, Bryn is vacationing in Scotland. Where is your favorite vacation spot?
Charlotte: Loved our trip to Scotland – in spite of the midges. But I love any place where the sun is out, there is a place to swim, and the food is good. If there are some ruins nearby and a museum or two, that’s a plus.
Christy: The chimera is a motive for murder in Why Me? What’s your favorite mythological creature?
Charlotte: I confess to enjoying reading about all sorts of creatures and monsters, from the fanciful and appealing to the scary and menacing. Unicorns. Griffins. Medusa. Centaurs. Dragons. Pegasus. Nessie. I don’t have a favorite, but I prefer seeing depictions online or in books rather than in scary movies. What I find fascinating is how these creatures evolved in cultures and what roles they played in the lives of the original storytellers.
Christy: Speaking of myths, do you have a favorite myth?
Charlotte: I have always been attracted to Native American legends for their connection to the natural world of animals and nature. The trickster raven of Tlingit legends is one of my favorites. I like how his often times ill-intentioned actions result in benefits to humans. Maybe I just like mischief and happy endings.
Christy: Dead goldfish. We’ve all been there! Do you have pets now and/or when you were growing up?
Charlotte: We always had outdoor cats when I was growing up, but what I remember best are the deaths of two favorite indoor pets – a parakeet and a turtle. A friend and I buried the turtle in her backyard and performed a very sad ceremony. I don’t remember how the parakeet physically departed from this world. Then, when I was in college I had a pet zopherid beetle that I got in Mexico. It’s name was Morph for Fraz Kafka’s Metamorphosis. When it died a group of friends and I buried it in the Arboretum. There is no memorial stone.
Thank you again! I enjoyed reading your answers. If you ever go back to where Morph is buried, you can get him a memorial stone then! LOL
