Is Your Family at Risk from Hidden Dangers in Your Home

Lifestyle

Thanks for sharing!

As a parent, you’ll do anything to protect your children and the people you love. When our children are small we go out of our way to keep them safe from harm. We install safety gates, make sure hot drinks and pans are well out of reach, we cover the electrical outlets and never leave them alone with the dog.

These little changes help us ensure that our homes are happy, safe sanctuaries. The perfect place for our children to learn and grow. However, it would be foolish to think that any home is completely hazard-proof. With thousands of children being admitted each year to hospital due to accidents that happened at home, it makes sense to recognize the hidden dangers in your home and act quickly.

Read on to find out more.

Dangerous toys

The toys your children play with are supposed to bring them joy and hours of entertainment, they shouldn’t ever put their lives at risk. Sadly, defective and dangerous toys are linked to a frightening number of injuries and deaths every year – check out personalinjury.com if someone you love has been injured due to a defective toy or household item.

Choking, cuts and lacerations, eye damage, asphyxiation, and even chemical burns or respiratory damage are a possibility. Always check that the toy you’re buying hasn’t been recalled for any reason and you’re buying from a reputable retailer.

Water

You don’t have to have your own pool to have a potential health hazard at home. Water-related injuries and deaths can happen anywhere there is enough water! So that bath you’re filling up, the basin in the bathroom, and even the toilet could prove to be lethal. Especially if your child is small enough to fall in and not get themselves back out again. Always be wary of water in your home, keep doors shut where possible and try to educate your children as early as possible about the dangers of water.

Crushing

No one loves to climb more than a curious toddler. And this climbing phase can prove to be incredibly dangerous. Especially if they’re climbing on dangerous furniture. Chests of drawers, TVs and TV units, bookcases, refrigerators… if it’s likely to topple and you can see that it wobbles when touched, you need to ensure that it’s properly secured to the floor or the wall.

Poisons

We all know how important it is to lock away cleaning chemicals and bleaches. However, there could be other poisonous substances in your home that you need to watch out for. Medications are incredibly dangerous, especially in little hands, so make sure they’re kept well out of reach. Even creams and ointments can irritate eyes and prove to be toxic when ingested.

And don’t forget the risks in your garden. Do you know the names of all the flowers and plants you have growing in there? Could they be toxic to children? If you’re unsure of what you have in your backyard do some research to keep everyone safe!
