JJ is missing her sweetheart, tired of the winter rains, and distracted by everybody’s questions about when the wedding’s happening. Even more worrying, her foster-daughter’s father has failed to show up on schedule. No wonder JJ’s struggling to wrap this one up before someone else bites into the wrong donut. There’s no time to lose, because something truly essential is on the line: saving the bakery—and JJ’s favorite espresso brownies!

Guest post: A Traveling Writer

Regular readers of my blog (https://www.ninjalibrarian.com) know that in addition to my love of writing, I have a well-nourished love of travel. I’m not in it for a weekend here or there (well, that too, if called for), but extensive and often strenuous trips. While no doubt all the travel and adventure helps to make me a more interesting person and maybe even a more interesting writer, there’s also no denying that it can make it hard to be any kind of writer at all! Long days on the road or the trail don’t leave a lot of time or energy for writing. So how do I cope with my sometimes conflicting loves?

When we spent four months in New Zealand, we spend six weeks of it parked in an apartment in Christchurch, just “living there.” In that time, I was able to finish the edit of Death By Library. Since we had a home base and whole days at a time with no itinerary, writing wasn’t hard. On the other hand, when we spent five weeks driving across the US, visiting friends and relations at almost every stop, writing wasn’t possible. I had to accept that, apart from my journal, it wasn’t a time for writing.

Even more challenging is the time I spend in the wilderness. No word processor, and little time or energy for spinning yarns! Sometimes, the only way I can cling to any identity as a writer is through that thin thread of a journal—you know, the one that can rapidly degenerate to something more like a list than a narrative. “Today we went here, did this. I’m tired. I’ll write more tomorrow.”

On other occasions, though, those long days can lead to long rumination about the next book or story I’ll be writing. I run through plot scenarios, sometimes run them past my companions, and if I’m lucky, actually remember what I thought when I have time to jot the ideas down as notes to be developed later.

I sometimes wonder about travel writers. Is it easier to write—really write, not jot notes—on a trip when you know that that’s what you get paid for? Or does the pressure to produce diminish the pleasures of both writing and travel?

For me, the secret is to balance time on the road (or trail, or water, or however I’m seeing the world) with time at home. I’m a homebody at heart—for the first couple of months after a long trip. Then I’m itching to be off again, and the novels have to wait while I accumulate more experiences!
