Ink, Red, Dead: Kiki Lowenstein Mystery Series
Cozy Mystery
3rd in Series
Setting – Missouri
Spot On Publishing (September 30, 2013)
Paperback : 221 pages
On a sweltering day, ace scrapbooker Kiki Lowenstein has to cancel a crafting party when she discovers Marla Lever, their hostess, nearly dead of the heat. Not only is Marla seriously “under the weather,” she’s also a hoarder, and her home is a house of horrors, complete with a corpse in the cooler. Meanwhile, Detective Chad Detweiler works a cold case that involves women disappearing all over St. Louis. The attraction between Kiki and Detweiler heats to a red-hot fever pitch, but will it boil over and leave both of them feeling burned?
Character Guest Post: Kiki Lowenstein (Star of the Kiki Lowenstein Cozy Mysteries) with a little help from Joanna Campbell Slan
I am Kiki Lowenstein, and my mother named me after her cat.
It could be worse. I could have been Puff Lowenstein. Or Fluffy. Or Snowball.
Honestly, I don’t mind the fact I’m named for a cat. My mother loved that cat even though she’s not too fond of me.
I wasn’t born a Lowenstein. I was born a Collins. If you ask my mother, she’ll tell you we came over in the 1600s with a group of English lords who’d been given land grants by the king. The best part about a story like that is, there’s no one around to prove you’re a liar. My mom will say that she’s traced our lineage, and her DAR membership certifies our ancestry. For the longest time, I thought DAR stood for Drugs Aren’t Right, which sounded like some sort of “Just Say No” offshoot. When I got around to asking, my mother got huffy and said, “That’s Daughters of Are Revolution.”
My mother is Southern and speaks with an accent. Her answer left me scratching my head. I tried again. “Are revolution? Do you mean OUR revolution?”
My sister Amanda grabbed me by the elbow. “Stop it, Kiki. You’re making things worse.”
What’s worse than a revolution?
A pogrom, I guess. According to Wikipedia, “a pogrom is a violent riot, organized with the aim of massacring or expelling a group of ethnic or religious people, such as the Jews.” That’s worse than a revolution, because in a revolution, people often fight for a just cause, such as human rights. In a pogrom, the violence always happens as a result of prejudice. There’s nothing just or fair or right about prejudice. The Lowensteins came to America to escape a pogrom. When I married George Lowenstein, his history and mine became intertwined.
By the way, Wikipedia used the phrase a “violent riot.” I’m not sure there’s ever been a peaceful riot. I think the two are mutually exclusive. But hey, what do I know?
After all, I’m a girl who was named for a cat.
Get to know me better by reading INK, RED, DEAD. You can enjoy it as a stand-alone, although it is part of a growing series of books. Readers call this: a fun cozy mystery, a good enjoyable read, a delightful story, plenty of suspects, (with a) great ending. Why not take a break from grim reality and peep into Kiki’s world?
About Joanna Campbell Slan
“Our best friend, our next-door neighbor, and ourselves with just a touch of the outrageous.” That’s how RT Book Review describes Joanna’s protagonist, Kiki Lowenstein. The truth is that’s a pretty good description of Joanna Campbell Slan as well.
Joanna is a New York Times Bestselling, USA Today Bestselling, and Amazon Bestselling author as well as a woman prone to frequent bursts of crafting frenzy, leaving her with burns from her hot glue gun and paint on her clothes. And the mess? Let’s not even go there.
Otherwise, Joanna’s a productive author with more than 80 written projects to her credit. Her non-fiction work includes how to books, a college textbook for public speakers, and books of personal essays (think Chicken Soup for the Soul).
Currently, she writes five fiction series: The Kiki Lowenstein Mystery Series (Agatha Award Finalist, contemporary, St. Louis setting, crafting), the Cara Mia Delgatto Mystery Series (contemporary, Florida setting, DIY, and recycling), the Jane Eyre Chronicles (Daphne du Maurier Award Winner, 1830s England, based on Charlotte Brontë’s classic), the Tai Chi Mystery Series (contemporary, senior citizen female amateur sleuth and Washington, DC setting), and the Friday Night Mystery Club Series (traditional mystery, 1980s setting, Midwest).
A former TV talk show host, college teacher, and public relations specialist, Joanna was one of the early Chicken Soup for the Soul contributors. She won a Silver Anvil for her work on the original FarmAid concert to benefit farmers.
In her ongoing quest never to see snow again, Joanna lives with her husband and their Havanese puppy, Jax, on an island off the coast of Florida. You can email her at jc****@jo********.com or visit her website at https://linktr.ee/jcslan
