A boyfriend who’s missing. Or was. . . Or is. . . A boat full of old bones. A community ice cream social. A friend in trouble, a spiteful witch, and an angry villain. The mysteries and fun abound in Destiny Falls. Hayden, Latifa, and their family and friends are up for the excitement and adventure.
Old Bones and Ice Cream Cones follows the series format of combining two stories that blend into one. A murder mystery and the island mystery.
The Island Mystery: Hayden’s boyfriend Han is missing. But she swears she saw him zoom by in his car. She’d thought it was a surprise, and that he was home early from his secret service case. She was wrong. The surprise is that his signal isn’t pinging, and no one knows where he is. There appears to be black magic behind his disappearance. Can they learn who’s responsible and bring Han safely home?
The Murder Mystery: A pile of old bones is found in an ancient fishing boat. They could be tied to the disappearance of two young women years ago, back when many of the Destiny Falls people where in high school. Many of the citizens had bad history with the missing students. Do the bones belong to them, and what happened? Were the they murdered? And could the murderer be living among them?
Hayden and Latifa’s many adventures in Destiny Falls will keep you guessing with each book in this fun and intriguing series.
My review of Old Bones and Ice Cream Cones
Old Bones and Ice Cream Cones is the latest book in the Destiny Falls Mystery and Magic Series. If you haven’t read the prior books in this series, you may not want to read this review as there are potential spoilers for the books prior to this one. Each book contains its own mystery which is solved in that book, but if you want to understand the characters and what’s going on in general, you need to start with the first book.
Destiny Falls is still as charming and magical as ever. It’s a town where any of us would love to stay. If you’re a book lover, you’d be enchanted by the library and its ever changing themes. Hayden Caldwell fell into this magical place when her cat disappeared into a mirror, and since that day, she’s fallen further in love with her Destiny Falls family and friends.
One of those particular friends has become more than a friend, but Han is missing…and then he’s not. He’s back, but he’s changed. He’s still the same old Han, but his appearance isn’t quite right. When Hayden and her “crew” discover this, they immediately know that black magic must be behind this. Hayden uses the resources available to her at her newspaper office, and the special room at the library where just the right books always show up for her. Her ghost friend, Gaspar, always shows up when she needs info from him too. His help comes in the form of stories which frustrates Hayden. However, she always ends up with what she needs to know.
Old Bones and Ice Cream Cones is another charming installment in the series which propels the story nearer its conclusion. The series is easy to read, has well-written characters, a magical setting, and an exciting mystery flowing throughout. I think that cozy mystery lovers of all ages will enjoy this delightful series.
Character Guest Post: Meet Granana
Meet Granana from the Destiny Falls Mystery and Magic Series
By Elizabeth Pantley: Author of Old Bones and Ice Cream Cones, Destiny Falls Mystery & Magic 6
Hello there, fellow mystery lover! I’m Wanda, Hayden Caldwell’s great-grandmother. I helped raise her since her mother disappeared just days after her birth. Oooo wheee, that’s a long and complicated story, you definitely have to ask her to tell you that tale! Hayden calls me Ganana – that rhymes with banana, you see. An easier word for a toddler to say than grandmother, and when a little one called me that it made me smile, so I figured, sure why not? So Granana it has been all these years.
My great-granddaughter took off on a business trip some time ago. She told me she was in Denmark, but the story didn’t line up. She’d never go abroad without yakking to me about all the details, you know? So, I was suspicious. But she’s a grown woman now, and who I am to give her the big inquisition? Turns out I was right! She wasn’t in Denmark at all, but in an enchanted world called Destiny Falls. How she got there is another one of them big stories – and the girl loves to tell stories, so I’ll leave that one to her, too.
I got to visit this Destiny Falls one time! Ohhh, my! It was quite an adventure! The travel was unique, I’ll give you that – you can’t take an airplane or train there, like a normal vacation. You get to be zapped through a mirror – just like you’re Captain Kirk or one of those Star Wars folks, or the one with that big circle portal, you know? It was a bit dizzying, but once I got my bearings it was a lovely visit. Hayden discovered the other side of her family there, and I must say, they are a delightful and loving bunch.
I miss my girl, but I’m happy that she’s so happy. I’ve always told her that, but this was the big test. And lo and behold, it’s true. When I get to see her through the magical mirror she’s always glowing with happiness. Of course, that new young man she’s dating might have something to do that that! But, as I was saying. She’s happy, I’m happy.

Hi Christy! Thank you for the great feature of Old Bones & Ice Cream Cones. It was super fun to give Hayden’s great-grandmother her own interview. Her first! I love her, she’s spunky and funny and modeled just a little bit after someone I know. 🙂
