Intent on getting their two mischievous dogs under control, Emory Martinez and her half sister, Vannie, join a group dog training program led by Shawn Parker. With a graduation certificate just within grasp and a party to celebrate their hard-won achievements, what could go wrong? For starters, their two dogs have decided to wreak havoc during the party and tempers flare. It turns out not everyone is pleased with the dog trainer and his mother, the condo association president. Whispers of the mother and son’s misbehavior, or worse, fly amongst the barks, whines, and growls of the canines.

Thanks for hosting me on your blog today, Christy! I appreciate the opportunity to introduce my new book, Buttercream Betrayal, to your readers!

When I start writing a new book, I have a general sense of the theme (in this case a dog training class gone wrong) and the setting with my core cast of characters. Other than that, I write by the seat of my pants and am often surprised where the characters take me and who the victims and culprits are. However, a few things happened to me earlier this year that prompted me to weave a fictional take into the storyline as I began writing.

The first was after I adopted my mini goldendoodle puppy, Missy, I knew she had to be included alongside my granddaughters’ dog, Piper, in the stories. Missy made her debut appearance in Frosted Yuletide Murder. As she grew, it readily became apparent that Missy needed some dog training classes because she was one mischievous pup—and still is! I took my experiences with the trainers and embellished them to include in Buttercream Betrayal. The first trainer I found used a German shepherd to keep the young dogs in line. It soon became apparent that it distressed Missy, so I found another, more caring, trainer. Unfortunately, as my protagonist experiences in the story, Missy’s rambunctious nature overrules the training, at least when she’s alone with me. Now if the trainer is around, Missy is an angel and obediently responds to every command! But the second the trainer is out the door, she reverts back to naughtiness, lol.

The second thing is tumultuous situations with the homeowners’ association that happens in the book. There’s an old meme that occasionally makes the rounds that says:

Well, that’s kind of what happened when I ran into all sorts of unpleasant interactions with my own HOA—through no fault of my own, I promise!—and I was at my wit’s end. So, I exacted some therapeutic revenge via my writing.

The third actual life situation I took inspiration from was from a faulty gas dryer hookup. Unbeknownst to me, the company that delivered my new clothes dryer hooked it up incorrectly. I returned home several hours later to an awful smell in the laundry room (the door had been closed). I flipped on the light switch and the fan switch and when the smell didn’t dissipate within thirty minutes, even with the door left open, I called my husband. Let’s just say it’s a miracle I didn’t cause an explosion by flipping the switches with the gas buildup in the laundry room! As it was, I had a severe headache for several hours after but thankfully we all survived! And now I know what to do if I smell natural gas… get out of the house and call the gas company immediately. While the potentially explosive situation in the book isn’t caused by a faulty gas dryer, it does give the culprit an opportunity to cover their tracks.

As I write this blog post, I think I’ve concluded that I’d much rather rely on my imagination than go through these types of experiences, especially dangerous situations. But, since I did go through them, I hope they were able to bring a feeling of authenticity to my story.
