Even if nothing else is certain … love still is.

Ruby Foster loves her job as a Pack Horse librarian, but secretly she dreams of being a nurse. Since there are no schools for nursing in the hills of rural Kentucky in 1937, Ruby contents herself with harvesting medicinal plants, delivering her beloved library books, and dreaming. Dreaming mostly of a life that doesn’t leave her living in the past. Until one day she discovers that “past” camped out by the Hell for Certain creek. Could it really be Cole, the one who left her heartbroken so many years ago? Just when she starts to believe in her dreams and hope for love again, Cole reveals his true colors. Or is the truth she sees only another illusion? When nothing else in the world seems certain, can the bonds of friendship bring one searching heart and one lost soul together again?

Book Excerpt

Ruby (on harboring a desire to be a nurse and discovering old medical books)

I opened book after book, each filled with glorious drawings of the workings of the human body,
more flaps to open and wonderful pages of how to do various things like wrap a wound or set a
break. I was so excited; I could barely contain myself. I turned back to the front inside pages, and
it read “Adapted for Home and Family Use.” This book and I were going to be new best friends. I
held it out to Ava and Mattie showing them how wonderful this one was too.

“It’s fascinating,” I said, pointing to a picture of human lungs and intestines. “Don’t you think?
To be able to see all the ways that things work.”

“I rather think it takes the poetry out of the human form,” Ava said. “I’d prefer to imagine
something far more magical working inside us.”

I couldn’t have disagreed more which I showed by shaking my head. “On the contrary, this is
poetry and magic and meaning all at once.”

“Sounds like you should be a doctor then,” Mattie said and winked.

I drew in a quick breath like someone who’d been found out. But hearing it said out loud that I
might be a medical professional and it not be said like a joke was strangely intoxicating. I closed
the book and held it to my chest like it was a most beloved book from my childhood.
