Emily Hildebrandt is not having a good week.
First off, she’s tasked with looking for, of all things, a missing dog. And not just any missing dog, but one owned by the aunt of Nick Stewart’s girlfriend, Trisha.
Like she wants anything to do Nick. Ever. She’s dating someone new and ready to take her life back.
Except…that missing dog case takes a strange turn when the owner tells her she never had a dog.
Why would Trisha lie about a missing dog? Or is Trisha’s aunt the one is lying?
As Emily digs deeper into the case, she uncovers far more than she bargained for.
A spin-off from the Charlie Kingsley Mystery series! The Redemption Detective Agency is a funny, twisty cozy mystery series set in the 1990s featuring silver sleuths solving cold cases. Great for fans of the Thursday Murder Club.
Interview with Michele (PW) Pariza Wacek
Thanks for taking the time to share a bit about yourself with my readers and me!
Tell us a little about yourself.
My name is Michele Pariza Wacek and I’m a USA Today Bestselling mystery author. I write both cozies and psychological thrillers, almost all clean and twisty. They all take place in the fictional towns of either Redemption, Wisconsin, or Riverview, Wisconsin, and all the books and series are connected to each other.
How long have you been writing?
I taught myself to read when I was three years old because I wanted to write stories so badly. I’ve been writing most of my life, but I only started publishing my fiction after my mother died in 2016.
Did you always want to be an author? What made you choose the cozy mystery genre?
Quite frankly, the cozy mystery genre chose me. I was writing a story for a shared anthology when it suddenly occurred to me what I was writing was a cozy mystery. That story kicked off my first cozy mystery series, The Charlie Kingsley Mysteries. The Redemption Detective Agency is a spin off from that series.
Do you prefer to read cozy mystery books, or do you have another favorite genre? What are you reading now?
I love reading all genres of books, especially mysteries (although about a year ago, I did go through a romantasy phase). Right now, I’m in a psychological thriller phase, and I’m reading “Jar of Hearts” by Jennifer Hillier.
Do you have a favorite place to write?
I just finished a cross country move and am living in a lake house in Wisconsin, so I haven’t completely settled in. I’m currently writing on the dining room table, which is fine, but eventually I want to set up my office in a loft. (I haven’t yet, mostly because my old dog can’t climb the stairs and I don’t want to leave her by herself.)
What’s on your desk (if you write at one!)?
My planners, my iPod, water, notebooks (lots of notebooks, I collect them) and pens.
What is the first book you remember reading as a child? What was one of your favorite books you read as a child?
The very first book I read was “Old Hat, New Hat.” That was the book I used to teach myself to read. I memorized it and would sit for hours staring at the words and trying to connect them with what I had memorized. Other favorite books include the Wizard of Oz series (there are like 20 books in that series), the Narnia books, Trixie Belden and Nancy Drew (of course!)
Do you like audiobooks, physical books, or e-books better? Why?
I do love physical books, but now I read almost exclusively e-books because it’s so much easier having e-books in my eReader, plus I can immediately download a book as soon as I decide I want to read it (or store it on my never-ending TBR).
If you had the opportunity to live anywhere in the world for a year while writing a book that took place in that same setting, where would you choose?
What a great question! As I’m currently watching a show that takes place in a villa in Tuscan, Italy, I’m thinking there (even though I don’t have an idea for it yet, but I’m sure one of my characters could stumble into a mystery).
What or who has influenced you the most as a writer?
Probably Stephen King, as I was reading him when I was way too young (I read “The Shining” when I was like ten). Also “Flowers in the Attic.” Basically all of the books that Gen Xers were reading even though they were waayy too young.
Do you have any author friends who support you while you’re writing? Do you belong to any writing groups?
Yes I have a number of author friends, including cozy mystery authors, and it really helps having that support system.
Finally, what are you working on now? Can you tell us a bit about it?
I’m working on “The Mysterious Case of the Missing Ghost,” which is Book 3 of The Redemption Detective Agency.
Emily Hildebrandt is starting to settle into some of the very strange cases that come through The Redemption Detective Agency’s door.
Like Aunt Tilde’s friend Ruth who claims she’s lost a ghost.
How does one lose a ghost? Apparently when the ghost decides to walk out the door.
But, to make matters more complicated, it’s not just any ghost but the ghost of Ruth’s dead husband. Who was murdered decades ago under very suspicious circumstances.
Emily has no choice but to go back in time and figure out what really happened to Ruth’s husband, in order for everyone to rest in peace.
A spin-off from the Charlie Kingsley Mystery series! The Redemption Detective Agency is a funny, twisty, romantic cozy mystery series set in the 1990s featuring silver sleuths solving cold cases, cats, dogs and an opposites attract love triangle. Great for fans of the Thursday Murder Club.
Thank you again for taking the time to answer my questions!
About Michele (PW) Pariza Wacek
A USA Today Bestselling, award-winning author, Michele taught herself to read at 3 years old because she wanted to write stories so badly. It took some time (and some detours) but she does spend much of her time writing stories now. Mystery stories, to be exact. They’re clean and twisty, and range from psychological thrillers to cozies, with a dash of romance and supernatural thrown into the mix. If that wasn’t enough, she posts lots of fun things on her blog, including short stories, puzzles, recipes and more, at MPWNovels.com.
Michele grew up in Wisconsin, (hence why all her books take place there), and still visits regularly, but she herself escaped the cold and now lives in the mountains of Prescott, Arizona with her husband and southern squirrel hunter Cassie.
When she’s not writing, she’s usually reading, hanging out with her dog, or watching the Food Network and imagining she’s an awesome cook. (Spoiler alert, she’s not. Luckily for the whole family, Mr. PW is in charge of the cooking.)
