Healthy Holiday Tips for Families

Family

Thanks for sharing!

Family vacations are pretty much essential for keeping high spirits and good health, both mentally and physically. From soaking up some Vitamin D in the sunshine to learning about different cultures to some all-action water sports, family holidays are the ticket to good fun and, even better, well being. However, it can also be all to easy to give in to temptations on holiday. Kids might favor gorging on ice cream rather than swimming in the pool and parents might be guilty of plopping themselves on the beach for the whole day without so much as a quick swim in the sea. Take a look at these quick healthy holiday tips for families!

Healthy Holiday Tips for Families

1. Treats

Tell the kids (and yourself!) that they can have one sweet treat a day. Whether it’s a slush puppy, chocolate drizzled waffle or banana split, they have the choice! If you’re going out for food in the evening, make sure that the kids are aware of what sweet treats are on the menu as they might want to save themselves for later!

2. Sunscreen

Although sunshine makes us look and feel happy, we all know the perils of too much sun. Make sure that you have a high factor sunscreen with you at all times. Set a good example to the kids by applying it on yourself first, even if you usually go for the oiling lotions. Try to stay in the shade during peak times (11-3) and apply soothing cream after sun every evening.

3. Activity

Plan at least one high energy activity a day for the whole family. This could be a game of beach volleyball, a hike up an amazing cliff, a half hour swim in the pool or even a run around the place. It’s also a good opportunity to bond as a family and create some magical memories.

4. Evening stroll

Let’s be honest, eating out on holiday is one of the highlights, so there’s no need to pass on the local cuisine. But make sure afterwards that you go for a stroll to walk it off a bit. It’s a lovely opportunity to watch the sunset and get some family photos. Take a good pair of walking shoes with you so that you are comfortable.

5. Ban technology

Don’t take your phones or iPads on vacation with you. They can distract the kids from playing in the sunshine and making new friends. If you need something to keep them entertained, suggest an activity for them to do and set out on an exploration together. They’ll soon forget about sitting in the hotel watching a cartoon!

There are plenty of ways to keep healthy on a vacation. Avoid the sugary treats, make the most of the warm weather and  beautiful surroundings and join in the fun with your kids. Remember that the best thing you can do for your health is the have a fabulous time!

[…] As amazing as your smartphone is, there’s no denying that it can add to your stress. Whether it’s work emails or social media messaging, sometimes there’s just too much information for you to take in. So rather than being glued to your phone, give yourself a break and turn it off. This gives you an opportunity to occupy your mind with less stressful activities that you enjoy. It also encourages more focused interaction with your family by removing one of your biggest distractions. Talking about your feelings and how your day has gone can instantly make you feel lighter. This will lift your mood and promote a healthier outlook, which can have a positive impact on your overall health. […]
