Caterer River Holloway cooks like a dream and is known on Shell Island as a “finder” of things. Which is why a desperate mother begs River to track down her grown son, Chili Bolz, who’s vanished.

Deputy Lance Hamlyn can’t find the missing man, so he teams up with River. The missing person case boils over into something frightening when Chili’s mother falls victim to a brutal assault. Worse, her dying words incriminate River’s friends in both kidnapping and, now, murder. River soon finds herself caught in an unsavory recipe for disaster.

Despite catering events and the return of her absentee boyfriend, River finds the number of suspects growing longer than her food shopping list. Along the way she befriends a black cat who becomes her crime-solving partner. River must locate Chili and discover who killed his mother before her own goose is quite literally cooked.

Stray Cats

Like me, my amateur sleuth, River Holloway, grew up in an isolated coastal environment with personal freedoms that kids today couldn’t even imagine. By the world’s standards, we had food and shelter and not much more. But by island standards, we were raised by an entire community and never went hungry.

River’s family didn’t have money for pets, so she didn’t have a pet growing up, though she longed for one. In Seas The Day, she befriends a feral black cat on a job. Soon the cat is at her back door, begging for food. River’s big heart compels her to feed the cat, and it sticks around.

She doesn’t know the animal’s name, so she tries a bunch on for size. The cat doesn’t seem to like any of her choices, and his ever watchful and patrolling nature soon prompt her to select “Major” for his name.

Much as she wants to cuddle her first pet, she must earn Major’s trust through time before the cat will let her touch him.

River has a realization that earning people’s trust is similar to what she goes through with Major. She’s always considered strangers as friends she hasn’t met yet. In the course of investigation, River creates a suspect list. She has a moral dilemma of befriending them and yet not necessarily having them as friends.

Her loving and upbeat nature doesn’t keep anyone at arm’s length for long!

My review of Seas the Day

Seas the Day is an enjoyable first book of the new Seafood Capers Mystery series. As with all first books in cozy mystery series, we’re introduced to a lot of characters in one book. There are some I really liked like River, her boyfriend Pete, and some quirky elderly ladies you’ll meet in the story. Several other characters only make short appearances, but I hope we get to see them in future books.

I could do without the character Viv though. Her morals are pretty questionable, and that bothered me since that wasn’t essential to the story. It’s not a cozy mystery that I would be able to share it with my mom. So there’s my caution to those who want to only read cozy mystery books that are squeaky clean.

The island setting is realistic according to the guest post from the author who grew up in an isolated coastal environment. A lot of us might think living on an island would be all peaches and cream, but unless you’re independently wealthy, it’s not. The residents work several jobs to make ends meet since steady money only comes in during tourist season. I really like that the author made that struggle apparent in Seas the Day.

River gets involved in the mystery when her late mom’s friend’s adult son goes missing. She begs River to find him, and River can’t say no. This puts River right into the thick of things which puts her in danger. I really enjoyed this well plotted mystery. My “suspect” kept jumping from one person to another. At first I’d think it was one person, but then I’d think that person might actually be sincere. Then I’d think it was someone else, or think I knew where to find people and things only to be totally wrong…and then right again! You’ll probably feel the same!

I am looking forward to reading more Seafood Caper Mystery books and finding out what River gets into next.
