Alex is fearless, precocious, and fueled by a strong sense of girl power. She’s also convinced the cops will never find the killer without her help, so she launches her own investigation—and quickly becomes a candidate for Seaside Cove’s youngest felon.
Now, unless Rick can solve the case with the clues Alex found illegally, his daughter might face charges of breaking-and-entering, the treasure of the San Manuel will be lost to pirates, and a killer could get away with murder.

Today we’ve got a character guest post from Rick Atwood! Read his post to find out how he came to own the Seaside Cove Bed & Breakfast and met his love.
My name is Richard J. Atwood, but everyone calls me Rick. I own the Seaside Cove Bed & Breakfast, which used to belong to my grandfather. A former Navy man, everyone called my grandfather Captain Jack—even me. All that I remember of him is that he was stern.
To be honest, I was shocked when I heard Captain Jack left me anything at all. I’d only met the man a couple of times when I was young and, as far as I was concerned, Seaside Cove was nothing more than a place I’d visited as a child.
As it turns out, I was Captain Jack’s sole remaining heir. My first thought was to just sell the place and be done with it. Then the lawyer told me about the debt. The mountain of debt that was crushing the B&B to be more precise. Unless I was willing to pay someone to take the B&B off my hands, my only option was to run the business until I could find a suitable buyer.
In the beginning, I wasn’t sure if Captain Jack had done me a favor or hated my guts. When I told my daughter Alex we were moving to Seaside Cove, she said her life was over. She was ten. Tough age. Lots of drama. And she hated the idea of leaving her friends behind.
In some ways, I was happy to leave New York. I won’t go into the reasons. Let’s just say they remind me of a bad country song. We were greeted by a young woman named Marquetta Weiss when we arrived in Seaside Cove. She told me she was our cook and that we’d met once on one of my childhood visits. She and Alex hit it off immediately. And I fell in love about two days later over the stupidest of things.
It was our third day here. I’d forgotten to stock the upstairs coffee station. One of the guests complained to Marquetta during the breakfast rush. Later that day, Marquetta approached me with a strand of red yarn. She tied it around my pinky and told me I was never again to forget my duties. When I looked into her gray eyes, my heart melted. I couldn’t speak. Couldn’t think. All I could do was giggle like a schoolgirl and say, “Okay.”
Marquetta and I are now a couple, thanks in part to Alex. As I said, she and Marquetta hit it off immediately, at which point Alex decided she’d found her new mom and set about playing matchmaker. Mind you, my divorce wasn’t final at that point, but that didn’t seem to bother Alex. I suppose I bear some of the responsibility for teaching Alex to always go after what she wants. At an early age, she “helped me” write my stories for the paper in New York. Working late at night, I’d hold her on my knee until she fell asleep, then put her to bed.
My reporter days are long gone. But thanks to my time on the crime beat—and a small town police force of two—I’m an unofficial consultant to the Chief of Police in Seaside Cove. This is the type of town where everyone pitches in, so when the mayor asked me to consult, what choice did I have?
In some ways, I think I’m just a foil for my daughter’s wishes. She’s in love with Marquetta and made it her mission to bring us together. I’d have to say, mission accomplished. And the consultant thing? Well, Alex loves solving puzzles. And isn’t murder always the biggest, most complex puzzle?
