Protect Your Pet from Insects with These Tips

Animals

Thanks for sharing!

Your pet can have a tough time if attacked by pests like ticks, fleas, and ants. It’s your responsibility to protect it from such attacks. Remember that if the insects find their way into your home, they can make both you and your pet sick.

A pest infestation is also possible, which can be costly and time-consuming to eradicate. If your pet spends a lot of time outdoors, you need to take precautionary pest and ant control measures. Here’s what you can do to get rid of those tiny yet pestilent insects.

Shampoo Your Pet as Often as Necessary

Your dog can pick insects outdoors as you take him for an evening walk or as you travel. If he plays in the yard during the day, he could pick ants when digging or playing in the grass. This is why it’s essential to inspect your pet closely before getting back to the house.

Brush the coat with a soft grooming tool to get rid of all dirt, debris, or insects. However, ensure you schedule a bath soon after spending time outdoors. This will depend on how frequently you allow the dog to play in the grass or wooded area.

As you inspect him, be on the lookout for bites and skin redness or itchy skin. Excessive scratching could require a veterinarian’s attention. If you notice a change in behavior or feeding pattern, it could be a sign of Lyme disease, which must be treated immediately.

Keep the Lawn and Backyard in Good Shape

Pests like ticks like to live on edges of ill-maintained lawns and in tall grasses. Pets, on the other hand, hardly keep on the sidewalk when outside. They like to explore by taking side routes into shrubs and undergrowth. Strive to limit your pet’s visit to those areas as much as possible.

Also, keep the grass low and well-manicured along the edges of the lawn and fence line. Consider treating these areas with pesticides as a precautionary measure every so often.

Tidy Up Inside and Out

You can keep your pet from pest infestation by keeping your house clean. Make it impossible for pests to nest within your home. To achieve this, ensure you vacuum floors, furniture, and carpets regularly.

Unclog drains and gutters and remove surfaces where rainwater may collect. Change water bowls frequently and empty flowerpots, birdbaths, and swimming pool covers.

Your pet’s bedding also requires special attention. Your dog should sleep in a clean area, whether they have a dog bed or use a crate. Wash his bedding and put it out to air as often as possible.

Keep his food covered so that it doesn’t attract ants. Make it a habit to clean up after him after feeding to collect any spilled food on the floor. Make it impossible for ants, mosquitoes, fleas, or ticks to come near your pet.

Take Away

Your pet is more susceptible to bugs, especially during fall and summer. He can collect all types of insects on his coat as he plays or takes a walk. To keep him well protected, take all possible precautionary measures. Ensure his space is clean and tidy, and the home is well maintained, inside and out.
