Guest post: Seasons of Writing by Debra H. Goldstein
When we moved into our new house last August, I sat in my office, a Florida room of windows, intent on writing. Instead, I focused on what still needed to be unpacked. For distraction from my worries about getting settled, I let myself be mesmerized by the common space greenery that blocked my view of other houses being built in the subdivision.
Somewhere in September or October, the leaves rapidly fell. Not only could I see some of the homes on the cul-de-sac behind me, but I realized that although most of the backyards ended at the same cut-off point, there was one that had a grassy area that ran far below the others. Its lack of symmetry irritated me to a point that I was too unsettled to write. I kept asking myself how the HOA had permitted the homeowner to mar my sightline. I also wondered if any of my neighbors shared my sentiments.
Spring came in March. It seemed like overnight, a thicket of green replaced my barren view. Ironically, the prettiest point was where the lush greenery and the extended lawn blended like the ocean and the skyline do. I suddenly had the urge to write. In the space of days, words for two stories and several chapters of my work in progress flowed.
Then, life intervened. My husband had a minor medical issue that occupied my time and thoughts. Writing was the first thing on my to-do list and one of the few things that never got scratched off. Life settled down, but rather than creative writing, I felt an obligation to work on promotion for the May 25th release of Four Cuts Too Many. Creativity was replaced by the need to write blogs, articles, and make speaking engagement arrangements. That is, until it dawned on me that besides the book that was coming out, I had a deadline for turning in the fifth Sarah Blair mystery. I forced myself to carve out time to finish and revise the manuscript.
I’m happy to report that not only will Five Belles Too Many be submitted on time, but I have come to understand that there is no season best for writing. Whether it is daylight or dark, if the trees are naked or full, or if my life is calm or crazed, is immaterial. The need and desire to write is within me. That it means so much to me is why I don’t stop writing. The act of writing seasons my life and makes me forget how fast the seasons themselves change.
