Cozy Mystery

Setting – Upstate New York

When a newborn baby is left on Alicia and John’s doorstep, Sheriff Ramsay sets out to find the parents, but his investigation is put on hold when Mac’s elderly buddy, Bert, is found murdered in his home. The top suspects are Bert’s poker pals who served with him in Vietnam, his ex-wife, and a woman who cleans his house.
Alicia and Gilly team up again to locate the baby’s parents and Bert’s killer while Sneaky conducts a private investigation with Gilly’s cat, Kittykai. Who will find answers to these double mysteries, and are they connected in some way?
Interview with Debbie De Louise
Thanks for taking the time to share a bit about yourself with my readers and me!
Tell us a little about yourself.
I’m a retired librarian and the author of twenty-two books including three cozy mystery series. I also write standalone mysteries, time-travel, poetry, and a touch of non-fiction. I moved to South Carolina from Long Island, New York in March 2024.
How long have you been writing?
I’ve been writing since childhood, but I’ve been published since 2007 for my first book and since 2015 for the other twenty-one titles.
Did you always want to be an author? What made you choose the cozy mystery genre?
Yes. I’ve always wanted to be an author but became a librarian because I needed a full-time career that was the closest thing. I didn’t choose the cozy mystery genre. It chose me. I considered the first cozy I published, A Stone’s Throw from the Cobble Cove series, to be a romantic suspense standalone book, but reviewers reviewed it as a cozy.
Do you prefer to read cozy mystery books, or do you have another favorite genre? What are you reading now?
I prefer to read a variety of genres, mostly mysteries. I’m currently reading Kate Quinn’s The Briar Club for a book club.
Do you have a favorite place to write?
I have an office with lots of windows that look out my backyard where I often see deer and other wildlife.
What’s on your desk (if you write at one!)?
Too much paper – lol! I’m a very messy person. I try to organize and file, but it just keeps piling up.
What is the first book you remember reading as a child? What was one of your favorite books you read as a child?
The first book I remember is Dorothy and the Wizard of OZ. I remember reading all of Frank L. Baum’s Oz books. As a teenager, I became hooked on gothic mysteries. I loved Phyllis Whitney and Victoria Holt’s books.
Do you like audiobooks, physical books, or e-books better? Why?
I don’t really listen to audiobooks except my own when they’re first recorded. I like both physical and eBooks. Since I don’t have any room left on my bookshelves, I use the library a lot for print copies. I also have a huge number of eBooks on my Kindle app.
If you had the opportunity to live anywhere in the world for a year while writing a book that took place in that same setting, where would you choose?
Gosh, that’s an interesting question. Personally, I’d love to visit Italy and/or Japan. I’ve been to England a long time ago and know that’s where there could be great places to write and also wonderful mystery settings. I think I’d go with that because of the similar language and the fact that I’d need to be there a year. I can see myself in an English manor or castle.
What or who has influenced you the most as a writer?
So many authors have influenced my writing. The great cat cozy authors, most of who, unfortunately aren’t with us any longer: Carole Nelson Douglas and Shirley Murphy.
Do you have any author friends who support you while you’re writing? Do you belong to any writing groups?
I have two publishers and belong to their Facebook groups. I also am a member of many writing associations: Sisters-in-Crime, Mystery Writers of America, International Thriller Writers, South Carolina Writers Association, and the Cat Writers’ Association.
Finally, what are you working on now? Can you tell us a bit about it?
I published the sixth Cobble Cove mystery, Rock a Bye Bye Baby last month that is currently on blog tour. I also have a short story collection, Suitcase Stories, and a gothic-type mystery book, Looking for Lucy, that should be out soon. I’m also working on my sixth Buttercup Bend cozy mystery but that will take a little longer.
Thank you again for taking the time to answer my questions!
Thanks so much for featuring my interview and hosting a spot on my blog tour.
